In October of 2018, as Hurricane Michael made landfall in the panhandle of Florida with record shattering winds, Team Rubicon, a veteran led disaster relief organization, actively mounted a response. At the same time, they had boots on the ground in North Carolina helping communities devastated by Hurricane Florence. Team Rubicon was founded by Jake Wood – a former Wisconsin football player and Marine who wanted to utilize the skills and experience of veterans to provide disaster relief. For many of the military veterans that make up the 100k volunteer force, the desire to serve is still strong.

in 1997, Diane Van Deren underwent a lobectomy in order to stop the epileptic seizures that had plagued her daily. While the surgery was a success, it robbed her brain of some function and memory. Though she can’t remember simple daily details or comprehend her physical limitations, Van Deren can run for hours without any sense of how long it’s been, or how far she has gone. The complexities of her mind have made her one of the world’s greatest endurance runners.
